Provenance: The artist's son, Richard Sorrell

Exhibited: Sir John Soane's Museum, 25 October 2013 - 25 January 2014, Alan Sorrell: A Life Reconstructed.

Literature: Sacha Llewellyn & Richard Sorrell (ed), Alan Sorrell; the Life and Works of an English Neo-Romantic Artist, (Bristol: Sansom & Co.) 2013.

As a student under Sir William Rothenstein at the Royal College of Art, Sorrell was encouraged to study and make copies of the old masters at the National Gallery. The tilted landscape in this study, with its rocky outcrops and trees, recalls Andrea Mantegna's Agony in the Garden (c.1458-60).
